“What Defines Us Is How Well We Rise After Falling”

Mid June 2018
Early Evening
Cabin Pic
Behind the mansion at the edge of the woods

The groundskeeper cabin was once old and rundown, kind of dilapidated, but mostly sound and not in too bad of shape, it just needed some work. Its state of disrepair was actually a part of its attraction for Logan. It had been a project to keep him busy and take his mind off of things he didn’t want to be thinking about. Sometimes he just needed a place to retreat from the activity of the school and being constantly surrounded by people.

Logan just seemed to have a knack for fixing things, so it didn’t really take all that long to make the place livable once more. The roof had been repaired, new mortar for the chimney stones, the chinking between the logs of the walls had been mended, and the interior renovated. It kept him busy and it was just what he seemed to need. He took time for the students as well. Taking some of them and teaching them about woodwork and the repairs he was doing. Letting them help with the cabin as an extracurricular project. He even encouraged those that could use their abilities to do so, showing them that their powers could be constructive and helpful, not something to be feared and hidden.

Inside the kitchen and living room are just one big area and take up most of the downstairs. There is an indoor bathroom with hot and cold running water. An improvement over some of the cabins in the wilderness he had lived in before. The shower is a bit small, being a stand up shower. He prefers to think of it as being cozy. His bathtub is sitting out on the back porch and he finds a certain peace in sitting out there to soak under the summer night sky, drinking beer and watching the stars thru the canopy of the trees. There is an upstairs loft that is his bedroom, when he bothers to actually go to sleep in his bed and doesn’t just fall asleep on the couch.

The sound of a deep repetitive thunk could be heard echoing for a ways in the woods. Each one quickly followed by the loud sound of wood cracking open. Logan had brought in another load of firewood in the back of his truck and was behind the cabin splitting it. His hairy and muscular upper body was bare and covered in a sheen of sweat as he was on his second cord of wood. His jeans, covered with sawdust from cutting down the tree with his chainsaw, showed a few dark streaks where sweat had dripped down. His work boots firmly planted as he arched the big heavy maul over his head to swing it down once more on the thick chunk of log he was splitting. The muscles of his arms bulged as they flexed to bring his strength to bear to split each log in a single blow.

Chopping wood didn’t really feel like a chore to Logan. Besides the need to stockpile wood for winter, this was often how Logan could work out issues with going out and getting in a fight. The hard physical labor kept his hands and body busy, but left his mind relatively free to think about whatever might be bothering him. It was also a good way to burn off energy and aggression when he was angry. He wasn’t angry or even in a bad mood today. Today was just about keeping busy and getting the work done so that when winter came he would be prepared and not have to move back into the mansion.

Logan paused for a second, not sure what exactly had caught the attention of his sharp senses. Lifting his head slightly he lifted his head and sniffed the air, checking for scents. Sure enough, there was someone approaching, he could just make out their scent on the still afternoon air. It was a warm one today. Taking out a bandanna from his back pocket, he wiped his brow of sweat while he waited for them to come around the corner of the cabin. He was just wiping down his neck when they arrived.

Dani rarely came up to the school much anymore. There were painful reminders here. However, there were still things that kept her tied here. The woods were still her preferred camping grounds, and really the only accessible one, and her horse stayed here. Brightwind found her years ago. While she was as a student and had stubbornly refused to leave. The only link she got from the horse was that Dani and it were linked. But she couldn't have a horse in the city so Brightwind had stayed at the school.

Which meant that Dani came up at least once a month, and often closer to once a week, just to care for the horse. She had been curious to find that someone else had been as well. Wondering what that was about. Otherwise, the stables were mostly empty, just one or two old mares.

She had just finished cleaning up the horse, having taken her for a ride and was hoisting her small pack on her shoulders. "I'll be back when I can Bright. I promise." The horse making a snort, causing Dani to grin. "I know girl, but what I'm doing is important and there aren't stables out there. At least someone seems to be taken care of you." Not that she ever thought the horse would be neglected here. The image of the blond girl just made her wonder and curious.

Still, it was time to head off, and as she did, she heard the unmistakable sound of an ax hitting wood. She hesitated for a moment. Dani didn't really get 'days off'. During the week, her real job occupied her, and on the weekends, the club work did. It was a Thursday and if she had to skip her real job tomorrow, she supposed that would work out. After all, some of it she could do remotely. She wasn't actually obligated to go into the office unless there was a meeting or a planning session so long as her reports, ideas and the like made it in on time.

There was only one person who'd be out in the woods like this chopping wood. There was no chance of her sneaking up on him. The sound was loud but his ears were better than that. She was already making her way over there. Quiet, as she often was.

"You know, the deer are pretty damn pissed at you. Ruining a perfectly good afternoon with all that racket." She grinned as she approached where he was. Moving suddenly to give him a quick hug. "Where've ya been?" She asked softly.

Unlike Sam who had disappeared with hardly a word and against character, she had known who Logan was the moment she met him. Including that he'd wander. She understood that might mean that there wouldn't be contact for months or longer, but that he'd always come back. Besides, Logan was as much wild animal as anything else she dealt with, and animals didn't like cages even if the cages had no clear walls.

“What Defines Us Is How Well We Rise After Falling”

Putting the bandanna back into his pocket, Logan watched the visitor approach. With a perfectly straight face he replied, “I think they would like the silence even less, cause that would mean I was hungry and hunting for some dinner.” Then he let just a hint of a grin turn up the corner of his mouth and a playful glint came to his eyes. Just for a brief moment, the gruff outer façade faded revealing that there was more to this complex person. Still rivers run deep, his sensei would say, and the undercurrent is always stronger then it appears. Then almost as if it hadn’t happened, it was gone, his regular stoic expressed returned.

Logan stiffened at first when the young woman moved to suddenly hug him. Then he worked to relax his body and tried to return her embrace with less awkwardness. He had never been one for getting overly emotional. Besides the fact that those who got close to him tended to get hurt, he was by nature a guarded and stoic man. He was hesitant to get close to people and tended to resist their getting close to him. Needless to say, it didn’t always work out that way and there were those who had managed to get past the walls and establish a lasting impression with the man.

Logan gave just the slightest shrug of his shoulders. “Around,” he simply stated at first to the question. “Your scent has been pretty faint around here too,” he added, referencing that Danielle had not been around the school much either. While Logan had been back for several months, word about his return had been slow to circulate. He was fine with that. He had kept himself busy with renovating the cabin. It had been nice to be able to focus on working and not let the past come flooding back again. Perhaps just maybe, he was finally coming to terms with all that had happened and his loss. The grief wasn’t gone, but it was loosening its grip upon his heart and mind.

In the time that Logan had been gone, it seemed the young students he had known had moved out into the world seeking to find their place in this life. While a few were still around, either frequently visiting the school or actually returning to help out with the next generation. Ms. Moonstar seemed to be neither of these. “And where has your path taken you?” he returned the question of the young woman. Having lost touch with most of those that knew him from the school, he didn’t really know what any of the old students were doing these days. But he had a feeling that as time went on and word of his return spread, he might very well find more would be returning to see if the rumors were true and that he was truly back.

Dani chuckled with Logan's response, catching the grin before he went back to his normal expression. "They don't want quiet just...less racket." She responded lightly. Something playful in her own manners and face. Most kids around here felt scared of Logan, but Dani rarely had and never minded sassing him just a bit.

All and all, Dani didn't really hug. She kept herself with one step back from most people. Like Logan, overly emotional wasn't usually what she did. But there were people who were exceptions. Logan happened to be one. Even though she wasn't completely sure why or how. Just that he was. She hadn't been raised to be super touchy-feely. Though unlike Logan, she wasn't scared anymore about people close to her being hurt.

There was a small eyeroll from Dani when his answer to her question was around and then the tables were turned. "Been around too." She grinned. If he wasn't going to answer, why should she feel quite so obligated to do it so quickly? Of course, Dani didn't know he'd been back. She had taken Brightwind out this way a few times but the cabin had looked how it always had and then the last three months had been...busy. Busier then it should have been.

Then he asked directly and she leaned against a tree watching him. "Just to the city." She made a face showing how much she enjoyed that. Logan could probably guess it even without her reaction. "But I'm doing good work. Trying to find answers to help us that aren't dress up in spandex and go beat bad guys." She laughed. Teasing him just a little.

"So you going to tell me where your travels took you?" She wouldn't bother asking how long he'd been back. There was a different understanding between them. He came and went. If Dani reached out, he'd respond, but she also wasn't going to reach out while he was gone unless there was an emergency.

The relationship between them was always comfortable. Maybe it was because he was older, or maybe it was because she recognized the animal in him. That understanding there. He also reminded her of her grandfather. The same slightly wild, slightly unwilling or unable to tame their inner natures. Removed just slightly from civilization. Dani had that in her too.

“What Defines Us Is How Well We Rise After Falling”

Logan had not been surprised by Dani’s initial response of having been around too. He should have known that quip was coming. She had always been sharp, both in wit and tongue. But her horse was being taken care of, so that indicated that she hadn’t really gone far and was at least coming by the stables from time to time. If she was truly going to be gone, either the horse would be gone too or the even less likely situation of someone else being given the horse would have happened.

Logan tilted his head to the side and raised an eyebrow at Dani’s answer. It wasn’t so much that Dani was saying she had been in the city. Many students stayed in the New York area for either college or to live and work in the city. Especially as many of them didn’t really have any other home to go back to. Rather it was the comment about doing good work. “You a social worker now?” he questioned, trying not to scoff. “Feed the poor and find shelter for the homeless?” he added in a flat tone. That didn’t really seem to fit with the young girl he had known. “Sides, feels good to beat on ‘Bad Guys,” he said with a grin, cracking his metallic knuckles to emphasize the point. “Whether they are wearing spandex or not,” he teased back with a wink.

Logan just kind of shrugged at where all he had been. “You know me, just wandering mostly,” he suggested, though he knew very well that was not likely going to fly. She could be a persistent young girl as a student and he didn’t figure Dani had out grown that. Much of his time had been spent doing just that, wandering the edges of civilization. He hadn’t really had any destination, or clear purpose either. For a time just lost in mind as well as body. “Eventually ended up in a monastery,” he told her, knowing just how incredible and unlikely that sounded despite being the actual truth. Of course it wasn’t the first time, though few knew that he had spent time in the past helping to rebuild a monastery in Japan.

Dani wasn't a stranger around the mansion. At times she wished she was. She still didn't believe in the way they were doing things but she did believe that having this save place for mutants was needed. A place for them to learn and grow up without the larger world. In fact, if she hadn't had this place, it was a question of if she'd even be alive. And they kept Brightwind without any money so she couldn't completely cut ties with the place.

Logan was trying to not scoff and Dani wasn't. Scoffing instead. "No, I tried that path and didn't make it through a semester." It wasn't school. It was that it wasn't what she had hoped it was. Finding it all very disappointing. And slow. And knowing perfectly well that just like being an X-Men, at the end of the day? It wasn't going to change anything. Being a social worker meant a small change on a small scale. One or two people helped and a lot more that she'd never be able to do anything for. No. Fuck that. This was slower but long term. "Right now? Most of my work is in general awareness. Rallies and the like. But it's the start." She shrugged. The rest of the plans that Drew had? Those weren't for other ears.

"Oh beating on the bad guys is a special kind of pleasure." She grinned. "And no offense to you about the spandex. I know you love it." She stuck her tongue out at him in a joke.

There was a reason Dani got along with Logan. They were kindred spirits, though Dani was more civilized. Some would argue she was tamer but she'd never described herself that way. She was just as fierce as ever. Just she was pointed better. But she missed the wilderness. Wishing in many ways that she could have followed Logan out to nowhere to wander for a year or so.

It didn't surprise her to find out he had been at a monastery. That seemed right up his ally. She had seen his room and space and knew him. "Yeah where was it?" She asked. "And what did you do there?" Her curiosity blooming.
